Background of the Study
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing health concern worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where it contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality. Nigeria, with its high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, sees a significant number of CKD cases (Ibrahim & Afolabi, 2024). Effective management of CKD is essential to prevent progression to end-stage renal failure, which often requires dialysis or kidney transplantation. Nurses play an integral role in CKD management, providing patient education, monitoring treatment adherence, and assisting in managing symptoms such as edema, fatigue, and electrolyte imbalances (Aliyu et al., 2023).
Borno State Specialist Hospital (BSSH) in Nigeria, located in a region with limited healthcare resources, faces the challenge of managing patients with CKD effectively. The awareness and knowledge of CKD management among nurses at BSSH are critical to improving the quality of care and patient outcomes. Nurses' role in CKD care includes educating patients on dietary modifications, medication adherence, and lifestyle changes that slow disease progression. However, there is a gap in understanding how well nurses at BSSH are prepared to manage CKD based on their level of awareness and training.
This study aims to evaluate nurses’ awareness of CKD and their management strategies at Borno State Specialist Hospital, with the goal of identifying gaps in knowledge and practices, and suggesting improvements in care delivery.
Statement of the Problem
The incidence of chronic kidney disease is rising in Nigeria, and its effective management is crucial in preventing further health complications. Nurses, as primary caregivers, are responsible for educating patients, administering medications, and assisting in symptom management. However, there is limited research on nurses' awareness of CKD management in Nigerian hospitals, particularly in Borno State. Without proper awareness and understanding of CKD guidelines, nurses may not provide optimal care, leading to worsened patient outcomes. There is a pressing need to investigate how nurses' awareness of CKD affects their management strategies at BSSH.
